THE HISTORY OF ADOBE: HOW TWO ENGINEERS ENDED UP OWNING THE DESIGN INDUSTRY

Before Adobe was a subscription and a monthly charge on your card, it was two frustrated engineers at Xerox who couldn't get anyone to care about a printing language. Here's how that turned into the software stack the entire design industry runs on.

Open any design file today — a logo, a poster, a Figma export headed to print — and there's a good chance Adobe touched it somewhere along the way. Not because Adobe makes the best tools, necessarily, but because it made the tools first, and then made sure everyone else's tools had to speak its language. That's not an accident of branding. It's the result of one very specific decision made in 1982 by two engineers who were tired of their employer sitting on a good idea.

We think the Adobe story is worth telling slowly, because it's not really a story about software. It's a story about what happens when a company controls the format — the underlying language — that an entire creative industry is built on.

Two Engineers, One Frustrating Employer

John Warnock and Charles Geschke met at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center, the legendary PARC lab that also gave the world the computer mouse and the graphical interface. While there, the two computer scientists developed something unglamorous-sounding but genuinely important: a page description language. In plain terms, it was a way to tell a printer exactly where every letter, line, and shape on a page should go — described mathematically, so it would look the same regardless of which printer or screen was rendering it.

Xerox, as it often did in this era, looked at the idea and didn't move on it. Frustrated by the lack of interest, Warnock and Geschke left and started their own company to bring the technology to market themselves. They named it Adobe, after a creek near their homes — not an acronym, not a strategy, just a place they liked.

That page description language became PostScript. And PostScript is really where this whole story starts to matter.

Why a Printing Language Became a Design Revolution

Here's the part worth sitting with for a second, because it's the pattern that repeats through the rest of Adobe's history: whoever controls the technical language of a medium ends up shaping how people practice the craft built on top of it.

PostScript didn't just make printing more consistent. It made it possible for a designer to trust that what they built on screen would print exactly as intended, on any compatible device. That reliability is what turned Apple into an early believer — the company licensed PostScript and built it into the LaserWriter printer, and that combination, alongside page-layout software from Aldus, effectively created the desktop publishing industry as we know it. Design stopped being something you handed off to a print shop and hoped for the best. It became something you could control end to end.

This is the moment Adobe stopped being "a printer company" and started being infrastructure for creative work.

Building the Toolkit: Illustrator and Photoshop

With PostScript established, Adobe built tools that took advantage of it directly — and this is where the software most designers actually recognize enters the story.

Adobe Illustrator, released in 1987, gave designers a way to draw with vector paths instead of pixels: clean lines and shapes that could scale to any size without losing quality. It became, and remains, the standard for logos, icons, and any artwork that needs to hold up from a business card to a billboard.

Photoshop has a slightly different origin. It wasn't built in-house from scratch — Adobe acquired the distribution rights to an image-editing program originally created by brothers Thomas and John Knoll, and released it as Photoshop 1.0 in 1990, Mac-only at first. What started as a tool for adjusting photographs quickly became the default environment for anything involving pixels: photo retouching, digital painting, compositing, texture work.

Together, Illustrator and Photoshop split the design world cleanly into two working languages — vector and raster — and that split still shapes how design software gets built today, Adobe's or not.

The Document Problem: PDF and Acrobat

By the early 1990s, Adobe had solved printing and solved image editing, but there was still a gap: sharing a document digitally and having it look the same on someone else's computer was genuinely unreliable. In 1993, Adobe introduced the PDF format alongside Acrobat, aiming to make a file behave identically no matter what device opened it.

It's easy to overlook PDF in a story about design, but it's arguably the moment Adobe stopped being just a creative tools company and became something closer to digital infrastructure — the format sits underneath contracts, reports, and portfolios just as much as it does design proofs.

Growing by Absorption: Aldus, Macromedia, and the Shape of the Suite

Adobe's next chapter wasn't about building new tools from scratch — it was about absorbing the companies that had them. In 1994, Adobe acquired Aldus Corporation, gaining PageMaker (the page-layout software that had helped kick off desktop publishing in the first place) and After Effects, which brought motion into Adobe's world.

In 2003, Adobe bundled its growing library into Creative Suite, packaging Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign together for the first time. And in 2005, it acquired its biggest rival outright: Macromedia, bringing Flash, Dreamweaver, and Fireworks under the same roof. Whatever you think of how that integration played out, it meant Adobe now had a hand in web design and interactive media, not just print and photography.

By the mid-2000s, there wasn't much of the design pipeline Adobe didn't touch.

From Owning Software to Renting It: The Creative Cloud Shift

The next real turning point wasn't a product — it was a business model. Between 2012 and 2013, Adobe moved from selling perpetual software licenses to Creative Cloud, a subscription model. Instead of buying Photoshop once, designers started paying for access to it continuously.

This changed the relationship between designers and their tools in a way that's easy to take for granted now. Updates became constant instead of occasional. Access became tied to an active subscription rather than a one-time purchase. It's the same shift plenty of software went through in that decade, but for an industry as tool-dependent as design, it meant Adobe's decisions about pricing and features arrived faster, and mattered more, than they used to.

Where the Story Sits Today

The most recent chapter is still being written, with Adobe folding generative AI tools like Firefly directly into Photoshop and Illustrator — another attempt to stay ahead of how the actual work gets done, the same instinct that pushed Warnock and Geschke out of Xerox in the first place.

That's the thread that runs through all of it, really. Adobe didn't become the backbone of visual design through a single brilliant product. It became that by consistently solving the unglamorous technical problem underneath the creative one — how a page prints, how an image edits, how a document travels, how a subscription scales — and building the tools designers didn't know they needed until they existed. The software changes. That instinct hasn't.
